What we have tried to do on all issues is to give a fair hearing to those who do not always share our commitments. In this way we hope to have produced arguments which, in turn, will be given a fair hearing by animal experimenters, hunters, farmers and governmental decision-makers as well as those committed to significant improvements in the lives of the members of the animal realm. This is a book for those who want to think seriously and fairly about complex issues. It is not a book for those who want a cause to follow blindly.
